This panel discussion will offer a practical perspective on how the First Amendment’s free speech protections intersect with the general practice of law. The panel, featuring distinguished members of both the bench and bar, will discuss First Amendment speech issues faced by the non-constitutional practitioner including: defamation/slander; speech in the workplace; advertising/commercial speech; First Amendment defenses in criminal cases; school speech; and speech in non-traditional forums (i.e. government websites and Facebook pages). The panel discussion seeks to equip general practitioners to better handle issues arising from the free speech protections afforded by the First Amendment in their everyday practice.
