Parenting Styles CLE: What Produces The Best and Worst Outcomes for Children &

What The Court Can and Can't Do About Them

Psychologists began researching parenting styles in the early 1990’s. Because of the length of time and the numbers of studies,

we know to a reasonable degree of scientific certainty that certain parenting styles are tied to better outcomes for children than others.

Thus, under Virginia’s best interest factors, intervening in parenting style would seem to be appropriate. However, the right to parent one’s children is a

fundamental right with constitutional dimensions. Learn how lawyers and psychologists can work with their custody clients to optimize

their parenting and how judges and lawyers navigate the tension in the law surrounding this issue.
