Evidence Based Sentencing Practices CLE

The program will introduce and explain modern evidence based sentencing practices to achieve better outcomes for offenders and reduce recidivism. The course will cover the Compass, risk, need and responsibility principles, EPICS/Case Planning system, and available programs and cognitive interventions. Department of corrections staff will share the successful practices that have led Virginia to have the lowest inmate recidivism rate in the nation and how similar techniques may be brought to bear in the sentencing realm to mitigate risk and achieve more just and effective results. This program will add to the tool set of criminal practitioners, be they defense attorneys or prosecutors, with the goal of enabling better advocacy for justice in the courtroom.
